As an Oregon plant nursery that sells plants and trees online, we love seeing how different plants bloom in the Summer. There’s so many perennials, shrubs, and grasses that can add color and texture to garden landscapes throughout the region. That’s why we love working with customers all over to help build the yards of their dreams.
With that experience in mind, we wanted to create a list of some of our favorite plants in our Summer catalog to bring your landscaping to the next level. With each of these plants blooming throughout the season, you can truly celebrate the time of year in your yard. Check out some of our recommendations below!
With vibrant red and cream marbled foliage that grows in an arching shape, the Barberry Rose Glow is a deciduous shrub that can make a statement. Whether you place it in your front or back yard, allow it to grow in its natural shape or trim it to your liking— it’ll add a pop of color to your Summer landscape.
In addition, while it blooms in the summer with yellow flowers, it’s a beautiful addition all year long, displaying red seed pods in the winter. As it can reach 4-5 feet tall, the deciduous shrub can add levels and visual interest throughout your landscape.
Featuring tall elegant summer blooms and large, ribbed heart-shaped blue leaves, the Hosta Elegans is a beautiful addition for any shaded garden. When surrounded with other perennials, it can add visual interest and texture to your landscape. With its unique ribbed texture, when paired with smoother Hosta plants, it can create beautiful contrast in your landscape.
Popular with landscapes featuring shady gardens, it grows to 2-3 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide and is great for edging or clump planting. While the tall, lavender tinged white blooms grow in late Spring and Early Summer, the large ribbed leaves are an attractive focal point in your landscape all year long.
Heuchera Dark Storms have heavily ruffled, deep-purple bronze leaves with a silver sheen that can add variety to your garden landscape. With dainty, creamy flowers on long stalks that bloom in early Summer and attractive leaves all year long, evergreen, the mounding perennial can add color to your garden as the seasons change.
Also pollinator friendly, in the Summer it can bring bees and butterflies to support your landscape. Growing 8-12 inches tall, 10-12 inches wide, the plant can serve as an accent or provide groundcover. Placing it near taller plants or flowers, you can create levels and visual interest to create a truly varied outdoor environment.
As one of the largest and most popular Hosta, the Hosta Sum & Substance features large leathery chartreuse leaves and in the Summer, tall fragrant white flowers. The iconic heart-shaped, ribbed leaves, that can become a brighter yellow over time, can make a statement in any landscape.
Growing 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, with blooms sometimes reaching 4 ft. tall, these Hostas can be an imposing accent in your front or back yard. Whether surrounded by lower perennials or grassy groundcover, the plant can create visual interest that you can be proud of all year long.
When you need groundcover to complement your flowering perennials, Grass Overdam Feather Reed can create the perfect backdrop. The variegated grass features creamy white margins and flowers with feathery plumes with sand-colored seed heads.
Standing at 2' tall and up to 5-6' tall when the plumes flower, it can add levels while complimenting your other foliage. Whether you place it in your front yard or your backyard, this grass can provide beautiful height all year long.
As a medium-sized Hosta, the Hosta Aureomarginata is perfect for home gardeners looking for massing or planting in mixed containers. It features attractive, heart-shaped green leaves with distinctive golden-yellow margins that can add visual interest to any landscape. When planning out your yard, adding this Hosta can create levels when placed with plants of varying heights.
Like other Hosta plants, the Hosta Aureomarinata does well in the shade— growing 12-18 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide. Flowering with delicate mauve funnels in mid to late summer, it can add pops of color that celebrate the season.
A great choice for smaller, dry gardens or courtyards, the Grass Hameln Dwarf Fountain’s attractive, arching fluffy plumes can make a big impact. Whether perched on a low wall, on top of masonry columns, near smaller water gardens, or in a border, it can add contrast and opulence to your landscape.
Growing 24-36 inches tall and 18-30 inches wide, it can create levels and add contrast throughout your garden. With a lush, green appearance in the summer and a golden, russet color in fall, it’s an attractive focal point in your yard all year long.

Low-maintenance shrubs make an excellent addition to your landscaping by reducing the time you spend taking care of them throughout the season. Surprisingly, low maintenance doesn’t always mean you’re stuck with dull, green shrubs that look like every other hedge up and down your block.
If you’re looking for a brilliantly-colored, low-needs landscape shrub, look no further than the beautiful barberry!
